Seattle, WA
A lot of us get station here by being in the military. In addition, I have found they do not have black stylists here. Everywhere you go Asians or Caucasian are doing hair and have salons. In addition, they will refuse service to you quick. The few black stylists that you do run across here charge exorbitant fees and cannot do hair. Seattle is sad. I am from Washington, DC and I miss you all so much. Northwest women look like chicken heads unless they are mixed. On the other hand, most of us do each other’s hair. Washington State gets two thumbs down in style and fashion.

I am currently a proffessional hairstylist in detroit,Mi. Others say that we are the Hair Capital of the world. I for one think that we are but I do know that we don't rank number one in customer service. There are truly salons here that you can do a movie about. I am about to embark on opening up a proffesional salon. It's small, my focus clientelle I am aiming for is only the one's that are serious about there hair. I considered starting at 6am in the morning and taking the last client at 4:00. I'm 30 years old and have been working in the salon for almost 10 years and I refuse to do hair at home and I feel both sides of this forum. Client's want there money's worh and stylist wan't respect.Clients I'm sorry but if your hair is long and or relaxed great care is needed. If you can't take the time for your hair, time such as conditioner etc. Then the stylist is not for you. If you are sitting in my chair and I am your hair stlist and you know my work, let me do my work and by doing so you should receive just respect, proffesional service in a timely manner but where not machines. My instructor taught me about a couple of things one If you get into this business don't have toilet tissue feelings and two You can't please every body and in the past 10 years this holds to be true.

Underhanded attack on an African American
hair salon
Thu, 27 Sep 2001 01:50:20 -0400 From: haroldjax@yahoo.com
Art Robinson is an African American hair salon owner in Herndon,
VA.He owns and operates Sheldeez Beauty Salon. He also;retails
products in his salon and through his website www.sheldeez.com.
One of the many product lines that Sheldeez sells is Kera Care,
a product line as you probably know that is manufactured by Avlon
Industries an Illinois Corporation. As a means of informing more
potential customers that they could purchase Kera Care on-line
Art registered the domain name keracare.com. This substantially
increased Sheldeez sales of Kera Care and gave Kera Care an International
reach that it had not enjoyed before. Art thought that Avlon would
be delighted by his new increased level of purchases and perhaps
consider a more extensive relationship with him. Particularly
since their corporate policy as you probably know is not to sell
directly to the public and he was bringing their products to people
who couldn't get them otherwise. He was mistaken. Since August
2000, Avlon Industries (holders of a trademark on the word keracare)
has demanded that Art relinquish the domain name unconditionally.
That he give them the domain name for nothing. Over this time
Sheldeez has developed a significant on-line business selling
Kera Care products. A business and income stream that he has cultivated
and would be delivering to anyone that he gave the domain name
to.Because Art believes that he has every right to the domain
name, (he is a legal and lawful seller of Kera Care hair products)
he refused Avlon's demand. He did however suggest that they enter
into some sort of compromise. He at one point agreed to give Avlon
all of the domain names that they wanted. In return all he asked
was that they include him in an existing list of salons where
you could purchase Kera Care. Even this symbolic compromise was
ejected. He felt as if this was the least they could do considering
he held the domain names they so desired. They wanted the unconditional
return period. Never mind that Art had created an international
reach and distribution for their products, that he purchases the
products from their distributors, putting money in their pockets,
that before he registered the domain name that persons typing
in keracare.com got nothing. Now they get a legal and lawful place
to purchase Kera Care products.
On May 16, 2001 Art received troubling news. The corporate owner
of the products that he had recommended to his customers had sued
him for the domain name keracare.com ; The law is not clear as
to whether holding a trademark automatically entitles you to the
corresponding domain name. When you have some time please view
these cases where the trademark owner lost the case.
No matter what your thoughts are on who is entitled to the domain
name, you must agree that Avlon's next action were underhanded. When
it became clear that Art would fight the lawsuit and would not
relent ;Avlon through phone calls and letters to it's distributors
asked it's distributors not to sell to Art or anyone from Sheldeez.
This is illegal, unfair, and
warrants a lawsuit of it's own for interference with a legal enterprise.
They sued him that's one thing but to use these illegal tactics
is another. To interfere with a legal enterprise before a matter
is litigated is against the spirit of American Business. For what
reason would Avlon do this? If Art has no access to their products
he can't sell them, can't make money, has less money to defend
himself. There is a federal law in this country called the first
sale doctrine. It says that once you've sold a product to anyone
you have no say so in who they sell it to. Everyone in this country
is due the same chance at prosperity. The matter is in the courts
it should be settled there. Far too often businesses, small businesses,
get financially ruined by large corporations like Avlon Industries
because they have more resources. Small sole proprietorships on
the rise like Sheldeez even though they are right cannot
afford to be right.
If you disagree with this assault on fair play in business please
sound off to Avlon Industries in opposition to this travesty with
the following person:

Ali Syed, President-Avlon

You may e-mail them at marketing@avlon.com
You may call them at 1-800-332-8566, or 1-800-556-7101
If you know of a media outlet that would find this story newsworthy.
Please let me know. If you would like to review the filings in
the case, please click the links below. If you would like more
information you can e-mail Art Robinson at art@sheldeez.com. You
can call him at (703)309-5557

Hair Stylists Get Serious About STDs
The Associated Press - Saturday, June
10, 2000
Paul Nowell, Associated Press Writer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Atop a candy vending
machine in Tom Jacobs' barber shop sits a glass jar with freebies
for customers. But it's not filled with free combs or candy.
Jacobs is giving away condoms. Customers at LaPorsha's Hair Studio
are invited to take as many as they need - part of a program adopted
by hairstylists in five North Carolina counties to combat AIDS
and sexually transmitted diseases among blacks.
"The barber shop is the kind of place where the guys come
in and talk about what's really happening in their lives,"
said Jimmy Wiggins, a LaPorsha's customer. "It's not like
church where you hold back a bit. We really let it all hang out
here."
Jacobs said that's why he joined the program.
"There's some people who won't listen. They just want to
come in and talk about how many
15-year-olds they knocked up," he said. "I want them
to know, 'If you're doing it, be careful.'" The nearly 10-year-old
Positive Connections program, which operates only in North Carolina,
aims to train 100 barbers and beauticians in the Charlotte area
over the next year. If all goes as planned, they would counsel
300 men and women each week and distribute 1,000 condoms and pamphlets
a week.
Statistics from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention
show blacks, who make up 12 percent of the U.S. population, represent
37 percent of the AIDS cases; the CDC estimates one in 50 black
men and one in 160 black women are infected with HIV, the virus
that leads to AIDS.
The five counties participating in the program - Charlotte's Mecklenburg County and Durham, Chatham, Wake and Alamance counties - also have the distinction of being among the national syphilis leaders. In Mecklenburg County, there were 157 cases last year, and 133 were black. Of the county's 1,901 HIV cases - the precursor of AIDS - 1,549 involve blacks.
Jacobs and about two dozen black barbers and hair stylists attended recent training sessions on counseling customers about prevention and safe sex, giving away free condoms and making referrals.
As customers began arriving one morning
this week, Jacobs put down his scissors and comb and walked over
to his TV and hit the play button on the video cassette recorder.
As the narrator recited the grim statistics, the banter in the
shop fell to a whisper.
Besides offering free condoms, Jacobs every hour plays a 13-minute
video on the HIV/AIDS epidemic featuring President Clinton and
U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher.
Several women getting their hair done on the other side of the shop turned their heads to listen to the message. Jacobs, 49, said before he joined the program, he wondered whether all the safe sex talk would drive away customers. "If I've lost some business, no one said anything to me about it," he said. "I just don't want someone coming to me in 10 years saying, "Why didn't you tell me about this?'"

Hi how are you? My name is Sarah
and I live in the UK. My hair is thick and has a kink in it. So
maybe I'm lucky when I say my hair can be trained to straighten
or to curl however I prefer the sleek look. I would like to enquire
how people with Afro hair like your stylist Sharron B get their
hair so straight and de-frizzed looking. I would love to know
the secret behind your style plus actresses Tia and Tamera Mowry
from TV's Sister Sister. Any tips? Products? Services available
for hair? I would really appreciate it if Sharron B could briefly
let me know of the secret to sleek gorgeous looking hair. Thanks
for your time, Sarah
